Peringome–Vayakkara Grama Panchayat: A Journey of Growth and Transformation

Located in the Payyanur Block of Payyanur Taluk in Kannur District, Kerala, Peringome–Vayakkara Grama Panchayat is a picturesque hill-region panchayat situated along the foothills of the Western Ghats. Covering an area of 76.98 sq. km, the Panchayat comprises the villages of Peringome, Perinthatta, and Vayakkara.

The Panchayat shares its boundaries with Cherupuzha and Alakode Grama Panchayats to the east, Eramam–Kuttoor Grama Panchayat to the south, Kankol–Alapadamba Grama Panchayat to the west, and Kasaragod District to the north.

Historical Background

The origins of local self-governance in this region date back to 1954, when separate Panchayats were constituted for the villages of Peringome and Vayakkara under the erstwhile Madras State. Due to financial constraints in maintaining two independent Panchayats, they were merged in 1967 to form the Peringome–Vayakkara Grama Panchayat.

Originally, the Panchayat extended from the forests of Kodagu (Karnataka) in the east to Kankol–Alapadamba and Cheemeni in the west, Eramam–Kuttoor and Alakode in the south, and East Eleri and West Eleri in the north. The Kariangode River flowed along its northern boundary.

A major administrative reorganisation took place in 2000 with the formation of Cherupuzha Grama Panchayat, incorporating the villages of Pulingome, Thirumeni, and large portions of Vayakkara. Consequently, Peringome–Vayakkara Grama Panchayat was reconstituted with an area of approximately 76.96 sq. km, comprising Peringome, Perinthatta, and parts of Vayakkara. At present, the Panchayat is bounded partly by the Kariangode River and shares borders with Cherupuzha, Eramam–Kuttoor, Kankol–Alapadamba, and Cheemeni Grama Panchayats.

A Quarter Century of Transformation

At the beginning of the last twenty-five years, much of this hilly region remained geographically isolated during the monsoon season. Roads, bridges, and transport facilities were inadequate, and many areas depended primarily on footpaths for connectivity.

The introduction of the People's Plan Campaign (Janakeeya Aasoothranam) marked a turning point in the Panchayat's development journey. The decentralisation of planning and financial resources empowered Local Self-Government Institutions to prepare and implement development projects based on local priorities and people's participation.

Over the past quarter century, Peringome–Vayakkara Grama Panchayat has witnessed remarkable progress. Long-cherished aspirations of the people have been transformed into reality through participatory planning and community-led development. Despite challenges and resistance, the successful implementation of development projects fostered a strong sense of collective ownership and public participation.
